How to Choose the Right Pressure Washer Surface Cleaner
Picking the right surface cleaner starts with your pressure washer's GPM. From there, you're choosing a cover material (plastic or aluminum) and a size that fits the spaces you actually work in. Get the GPM wrong and you'll streak the concrete. Get the cover or the size wrong and you'll either fight the machine all day or burn out the swivel bearings.
Sizing by GPM
This is the one that matters most. Your surface cleaner has to be matched to your pressure washer's gallons-per-minute output, not its PSI. Too big and you won't have enough flow to spin the bar at full speed, which leaves streaks and zebra striping on the concrete. Too small and you're wasting capacity and taking longer than you need to. Use the chart below as your starting point, then verify with your pressure washer's spec plate.
Cover material: plastic vs. aluminum
Plastic covers (typically Xenoy or ABS) are lighter, cheaper, and shrug off impacts better than aluminum, which is handy if you're loading and unloading every day or working tight spaces where the cover takes hits. Aluminum covers (powder-coated, often aircraft-grade on the Whisper Wash lineup) hold up to hot water and last longer in heavy commercial rotation. They also feel more stable on big units. For residential and light commercial work, plastic is fine. For daily commercial flatwork, go aluminum.
Job type and maneuverability
Residential driveways and patios reward smaller units (16″-20″) that fit through gates and around landscaping. Commercial flatwork (parking decks, warehouse floors, sidewalks, big patios) rewards 24″ and up. The largest units (Mondo 49″ and Mini Mondo 31″) use dual-swivel, dual-spray-bar designs to cover serious ground in one pass, but they need the GPM to back them up. If you're between sizes or planning to upgrade your pressure washer in the next year, size up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size pressure washer surface cleaner do I need?
Match it to your pressure washer's GPM, not its PSI: 16″ for 3-4 GPM, 19″-20″ for 4-5.5 GPM, 24″-28″ for 5.5-8 GPM, and 31″ or larger for 8+ GPM machines. PSI determines how hard the spray hits; GPM determines how fast the bar spins and how much area you can cover without streaking.
What's the difference between Whisper Wash and Whirl-A-Way?
Both are pro-grade rotary surface cleaners, but they target different price points. Whisper Wash is the premium line, with machined-and-balanced spray bars, signature swivels using self-lubricating twin thrust bearings, and aircraft-grade aluminum covers on most models. Whirl-A-Way runs lower in price and offers more housing choices (plastic ABS or stainless steel) with sizes from 16″ to 30″. Bandit Pro Force sits between them with a sealed-swivel design and a rugged spun-aluminum cover. All three will do professional work; the right pick depends on your budget and how many hours per week you're running it.
Plastic or aluminum surface cleaner cover: which is better?
Aluminum holds up better to hot water and heavy commercial use, and the cover lasts longer overall. Plastic wins on price and weight, and takes impacts without denting or cracking. If you're a one-truck residential operation that runs cold water and bumps the unit around in transit, plastic is the smart call. If you're running hot water or putting 20+ hours a week on the machine, go aluminum.
Can I use a surface cleaner on wood, pavers, or painted surfaces?
Pavers are fine with the right tips. Wood usually isn't a good idea because the rotary action fuzzes softwoods and lifts grain. Painted surfaces are out entirely; you'll strip the paint. Surface cleaners are designed for hard, flat masonry: concrete, brick, stone, pavers, and similar. For decks and wood siding, downstream a wood cleaner like Wood Doctor at low pressure with a fan tip.
Do surface cleaners come with tips?
Most of ours come with two tips matched to the unit's flow rating. Whisper Wash bars are compatible with two-tip and four-tip configurations; if you need more tips or different angles, call us at (561) 314-0761 for availability and pricing.
Can I use hot water with a pressure washer surface cleaner?
Hot water capability varies by model and cover material, so check the individual product page before running hot. The 19″ Whisper Wash Classic is rated for hot or cold water in both cover options. Aluminum-cover Whisper Wash models and the stainless-steel Whirl-A-Way both handle hot water as well. ABS plastic covers (on some Whirl-A-Way models) should be run cold so the cover holds up over time. For the Bandit Pro Force, check the product page or contact us before running hot.
