How to Choose the Right Portable Soft Wash System

Picking the right portable soft wash system comes down to how you power it, the GPM you actually need, and whether the pump can take sodium hypochlorite. Get the power and flow right and the rig pays for itself in a few jobs. Get the SH part wrong and you'll be replacing pumps before the season's out.

Power source: gas or 12V

The Comet P40 and AR45 sprayers both run a Honda GX200 and push 11.1 to 11.4 GPM at 290 to 300 PSI. Go gas if you're full-time, working commercial routes, or hitting two and three-story roofs from the ground. The Pressure Ranger 2-in-1 is gas too, but it's built on a 316 stainless triplex pump and a bigger Honda so it can double as a pressure washer at up to 3,500 PSI. The Remco 12V bundles run off your truck battery. They're quieter, lighter, cheaper to get into, and there's no engine to maintain. The tradeoff is flow: 12V tops out around 5 to 7 GPM at 100 PSI. That's still plenty for most residential soft washing.

GPM and job type

For solo residential work like fences, single-story houses, and small roofs, 5 GPM gets it done. For most residential pros running two-story homes and driveways, 7 GPM is the sweet spot. Daily commercial routes, big HOAs, or third-story work from the ground means stepping up to gas. The Pressure Ranger 2-in-1 is its own animal. It switches between soft wash, pressure wash, and high-volume rinse by changing the nozzle, so one machine covers mixed work instead of two.

Built for sodium hypochlorite

Every system on this page runs Viton seals, polypropylene or stainless components, and a pump or diaphragm rated for SH. That's the line between a portable soft wash system and a portable pressure washer. The big-box pressure washer uses brass and rubber that break down within months of regular chlorine. Everything here is built to run SH daily without the pump quitting on you inside six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a portable soft wash system?

A portable soft wash system is a low-pressure, high-flow pump rig small enough to load into a pickup bed or mount on a small skid. It runs off either a 12V truck battery or a small Honda gas engine. You supply the chemical tanks and the truck. The system handles delivery and mixes your chlorine, water, and soap on the fly through a proportioner.

Which portable soft wash system should I start with?

The Remco 12V 5 GPM Soft Wash Bundle is the easiest way in. It's quiet, runs off your truck battery, has no engine to maintain, and comes with everything but the tanks. For more headroom from day one, the 7 GPM bundle handles two-story houses without strain and is the most popular pick for new residential operators.

Can a portable soft wash system handle commercial jobs?

Yes, but you want gas. The Comet P40 and AR45 both push 11+ GPM at 290 to 300 PSI, enough to soft wash a three-story building from the ground and run all day on a route. The Pressure Ranger 2-in-1 goes further. It combines pressure washing and soft washing on one machine, so you cut setup time on mixed commercial work.

Is a gas or 12V portable soft wash system better?

Neither is flat-out better. They solve different problems. 12V is cheaper, quieter, and easier to maintain, but it caps at 5 to 7 GPM and 100 PSI. Gas pushes 11+ GPM at 300 PSI for heavier or taller work, but you keep up with engine maintenance and it's louder on a quiet HOA. For the full breakdown, read our guide: 12V vs Gas Soft Wash Pumps.

Do I need a separate tank with a portable soft wash system?

Yes. The sprayers and 12V bundles on this page draw from external chemical tanks that you supply. That keeps the rig light and lets you size your tanks to the route you're running.

How long does a portable soft wash system last?

A gas sprayer like the Comet P40 or AR45 gives you several years of daily commercial use with basic upkeep: oil changes, pump flushing, and swapping worn seals and diaphragms as they go (we stock OEM repair kits for both). A 12V diaphragm pump usually runs about six months of heavy use, and most operators replace it instead of rebuilding. At that price, replacement is the cheaper call.
