Picking the right pressure washing equipment

The right pressure washing setup is the one that fits the work you actually do. A homeowner cleaning a driveway twice a year needs a different machine than a contractor running flatwork five days a week. Size the rig to the job and you'll make money on it. Mis-size it and you'll be replacing pumps and hoses faster than you can pay for them.

PSI vs GPM, and why GPM matters more

PSI cleans. GPM rinses. Most beginners chase a high PSI number and end up with a 4,000 PSI / 3 GPM machine that strips paint but takes forever to rinse a driveway. Pros buy for GPM first. 5 GPM cleans roughly twice as fast as 2.5 GPM at the same pressure. For residential exterior work, 4 GPM at 3,000 PSI is the practical floor. For commercial flatwork, 5.5 GPM and up is where the money is.

Surface cleaners are the productivity multiplier

A wand is fine for trim work, but cleaning a 2,000 sq ft driveway with one will take you two hours and leave stripes. A 28" or 36" surface cleaner does that in 30 minutes with no marks. If you're getting paid by the job, the surface cleaner pays for itself on the second driveway. Just match the size to your machine's GPM. Run an oversized cleaner on an undersized pump and you'll get weak, streaky results.

Hoses, guns, and nozzles: match the flow rate

Every component downstream of the pump has to be rated for your machine's pressure AND flow. A 3,000 PSI hose on a 4,200 PSI machine is a failure waiting to happen. Same with guns. A homeowner-grade gun on a 5.5 GPM machine will overheat at the trigger and fail. We carry pro-rated hoses (Rampage BEAST, up to 7,300 PSI in double-wire), trigger guns (ST1500 rated to 5,000 PSI / 10.4 GPM, SGS35 to 5,000 PSI / 12 GPM), and unloaders (VRT3, K7, VRT100) sized for the machines we sell.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PSI and GPM do I need for pressure washing?

For residential work, 3,000 PSI and 4 GPM is the practical minimum. For pro daily use on driveways and concrete, 3,200 PSI / 5.2 GPM is the sweet spot. For commercial flatwork and fleet jobs, look at 3,500 to 4,200 PSI and 5.5 to 8.5 GPM. GPM matters more than PSI for production cleaning. It's what moves the dirty water off the surface.

What's the difference between pressure washing and soft washing?

Pressure washing uses 3,000+ PSI of mechanical force to blast dirt off hard surfaces like concrete and brick. Soft washing uses under 150 PSI plus a sodium hypochlorite mix to chemically kill algae and mildew on more delicate surfaces like roofs, siding, and stucco. Pressure washing a roof will damage shingles and void the manufacturer's warranty. Soft washing alone won't fully clean concrete because it needs the mechanical force from high pressure. Most pros run both rigs.

Do I need a surface cleaner, or is a wand enough?

A wand works for small areas and detail work like trim, corners, and narrow walkways. For anything over a few hundred square feet, a surface cleaner is what turns a long day into a profitable one. It cleans 4 to 10 times faster than a wand and leaves a uniform finish without stripes. If you're charging by the job, the surface cleaner pays for itself in your first week.

Gas or electric pressure washer for professional use?

Gas, almost always. Consumer-grade electric pressure washers typically max out around 2,000 PSI and 1.5 GPM. That's fine for a homeowner cleaning patio furniture but not enough flow for commercial work. Every pressure washer we sell is gas-powered. The 3,000 and 3,200 PSI units run a Honda GX390, and the 4,200 PSI truck mount runs a Honda GX690, each paired with a commercial-grade triplex pump.

What hose do I need for my pressure washer?

Match the hose pressure rating to your machine (or exceed it) and use 3/8" ID for any machine over 4 GPM. A pro 5.5 GPM machine running through 1/4" hose will starve at the gun. Our Rampage BEAST hose comes in 3/8" single wire (rated to 4,300 PSI), 3/8" double wire (7,300 PSI), and 1/2" double wire (6,200 PSI), all with an abrasion-resistant gray jacket built for daily commercial use.

Can I pressure wash my house siding or roof?

No. Those are soft wash surfaces. High-pressure water will drive moisture behind vinyl siding, strip paint from wood, and void the warranty on asphalt shingles. For siding and roofs, use a soft wash setup (sodium hypochlorite mix at low pressure). For concrete, brick, stone, and unsealed pavers, pressure washing is the right call.
